This trip was my second art student outing to the MET and the Chelsea Galleries in New York City. It was a little bit of a scary one, considering that I was pretty much wandering around a huge museum by myself. At the same time, it was eye opening and relieving to be taking in art at my own pace. I found a lot of interesting corners of the museum and met people that I wouldn't have met if I was with other friends.
The building itself it an amazing piece of work. The space around it inspired the pieces for my halfway show: Pieces of the Pie.
Of course the first place I went inside the MET was the Egyptian section to see the mummies.
Mummies have always fascinated me. I think it’s
the process of how the Egyptians dealt with death and the afterlife; from
preserving the body to preparing the human (spiritually) for the afterlife. It
was something that was so important to them. You don’t see that today in most
religions or cultures, especially in America.
Another thing I like about mummies is the
materials and natural elements that surround the process. I’m a fan of textiles
and natural materials in general. Like when I’m working with printmaking, I
look closely at the paper I’m printing on, the ink I’m using and the chemicals
that are used in the process of producing the print. Same goes for mummies.
They used different chemicals and materials to wrap the mummy, along with the creation the tomb, organ jars and burial location.
My next two favourite places in the MET are the Armory section and the Print and Photography section.
The MET was also my first sighting of a Van Gogh painting, one of my favourite painters besides Turner and Delacroix.
The last wonderful part of the MET before heading off to the Chelsea Galleries was seeing these two children making sketches of statues. It felt a little wrong to take a picture of them, but it captured the very reason I love being an art student; teaching and sharing the magic of the art world.
Finally, we proceed onto the Chelsea Galleries. Again, I was on my own, but since I was out in the city and not in a building I decided to find some people from the trip to hang out with. At first we were very confused as to how it worked, but once we figured it out it was a lot of fun picking out different shows to see.
This picture is another example of inspiration for my halfway show.
The awesome ladies I hung out with inside a green elevator.
And a collect of different works we viewed.
